News Update 30 June 2008

For all you Stormy Monday fans, the band has gone to that great gig in the sky. We might re-form at some point, but there were several factors contributing to the decision.

I'm currently working on different projects including a rock opera, and a website starring the teen guitar heroine LYLETH. Check out her website <www.lyleth.net>

Still playing rhythm guitar, backing vocals and percussion in the Dire Straits tribute band DIRE TRAITS. Ray (from Stormy Monday) fronts this band.We have been playing at large theatres around the SouthWest of England. Check out their website is <www.diretraits.net>for gigs.

Recently I was honoured to have one of my poems included in The First Anthology of Works from the Friends' Poetry Reading. This is an international publication put together by supporters of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The other English poet included was John Donne. I wonder what on earth he would have made of having his poem and my The Parcel (click on Poetry page Standing on Your Head) printed side by side?!

Live performance and CD reviews

On the first Friday in February the Great Hall at Dartington resonated with the huskily soulful voice and multi-coloured guitar playing of Rosemary Schonfeld The set was peppered with examples of Rosemary's quirky humour which led us seamlessly from one song to the next.... The guitar styles Rosemary used varied as much as the subject matter of the songs. From rock through jazz to country and western, from the terrors of falling in love to satires on shopping and normality, both music and words have twists and turns which keep a sense of surprise alive. There is a depth and complexity to the songs which ask for them to be listened to again and again.

Review of 'Away from Here' in Folk Roots magazine

Ten powerful and witty original songs by Rosemary Schonfeld. As you'd expect from her previous work with Ova, her experience as a sound engineer and her reputation as an expert percussionist and guitar player, the album is well-produced and accomplished, with A variety of subtle, interesting backings.... Check it out for good songs: Nights Without Armour (without emotional protection), Why Did I Let, and a strong, warm voice.

Standing On Your Head with illustrations by Ann Barefoot

A delightful and moving collection of new poetry. Rosemary Schonfeld deals deftly and humorously with a variety of issues... Her rhythmical blend of serious emotion and nonsensisms forms an engaging collection that is a treat to read, and teenagers in particular will enjoy this life affirming verse.

There are many poems about lovers of different ages, of relationships that might happen, of a strange almost ghostly encounter, of lovers lost, mistakes made, tender hopes for the future. Most are told as stories, using imaginative scenarios that immediately draw the reader in and allow subtle yet unobtrusive explorations of an idea, feeling or experience. A poem called The Clown on the Merry-go Round is one of the most memorable examples of this. It's worth getting the whole anthology just for that one.

Elaine Miller
